Learn

Grace Church values life-long education, as our members seek to connect their lives with their faith.  We offer ongoing Bible studies and a variety of educational opportunities related to contemporary questions in theology, current events, and issues of importance to the Episcopal Church.

Rector’s Forum

The Rector’s Forum meets Sunday morning at 9:40 am, as part of our Education Hour. Our Rector offers classes on a range of topics from theology and church history, to social action and current events. The forum is also a venue for guest speakers in other Grace ministries and educators from the larger New York area.

The Rector’s Bible Study

The Rector’s Bible Study meets every Tuesday at 10:30am, to study a different book of the Bible every fall and spring. The Rector offers insight into the history, literature, and theology behind the scriptures.

Interfaith Weekend with Synagogue

In partnership with the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, we offer a weekend of scholarly engagement in topics relevant to both the Jewish and Christian faith. Hosted by each house of worship alternately, this program invites a Jewish or Christian scholar whose work bridges both traditions to share worship, meals and study with our joint congregations, as we gather to learn more about our own faith and the faith of our neighbors.

Discussion Groups

Grace Church offers a variety of opportunities to expand our minds and come together for fellowship and conversation. These include monthly Burning Books groups and Fiery Films.

Education for Ministry (EFM)

Education For Ministry is a four-year ministry formation and theological education program for lay persons.  Participants meet once a week, led by trained mentors.   Participants study the Bible, church history and theology, while learning to engage together in theological reflection.  EFM is an outreach program of the School of Theology, University of the South, located in Sewanee, Tennessee.

Grace's EFM group is now in its second year.  Students are guided in discerning and nurturing their ministries, as we are called to do by our baptismal covenant.  The process provides each member with knowledge and confidence about themselves, teaching them to work with others as a group while deepening their faith.

Inquirer’s Class

Grace Church holds a yearly Inquirer’s Class called "Believing, Belonging, and Becoming" that invites new members as well as adult confirmands to learn more about the history, worship and faith of the Episcopal Church.

Children’s Ministry

Through discussing, creating, sharing, and worshipping together, children of all ages experience and participate in their own faith. They learn that they are valuable members of Grace, and are loved and valued by God.

Sunday School

Godly Play

Grades Pre-K – 1st

Our Kindergarten through 1st grade are invited to their first experiences of God’s stories through this Montessori based curriculum. Children have their own space where Bible stories are present on the shelves for them to explore. They are encouraged to interact with the stories and to respond with their own creativity.

Firelight Kids

Grades 2-3 and 4-5

This interactive program reaches out to 2-3rd grade and 4-5th grade children. Through our Living the Good News curriculum, children explore our Sunday lectionary, with multi-modal learning such as drama, art, writing, videos, and games. The lectionary curriculum prepares them to take fuller part in our worship life.

Rite 13

Grades 6-8

Rite 13 invites those in Sixth to Eighth grades to discover the relevance of faith in their own lives. The curriculum provides a safe place to explore new ideas, new interests, and new abilities. Jr High School students also plan and implement our yearly Lenten focus on service, and our Lenten community offering.

High School / Confirmation

Grades 9-10

We utilize the Journey to Adulthood curriculum, discussions, and scripture study to prepare our youth for Confirmation. Over two years of classes, we learn about the history of the church, personal spirituality, worship, and social action. Diocesan Confirmation is celebrated each spring at the Cathedral of the Incarnation for youth 16 years old or older.

Jr. High and High School Students are invited to gather with the clergy for dinner and activities that involve them in the life of the church. We meet one Sunday a month, from 6-8 pm.

Nursery

Infants and toddlers may be cared for in our Nursery during Sunday morning services from 8:30 am to 12 noon.

Supervised care is provided by professional caregivers. Each child must be registered in the Nursery by an accompanying adult. Parents or guardians are required to remain on church grounds at all times. If you wish to have your nursery-age child with you during Communion, please come to the Nursery at the Offertory to collect him or her personally.
